Presented by: Greg Myer, PIO, Broward County Aviation Department
Start time: 2:00 p.m.
This presentation will cover three significant events that occurred at Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) during the past several years. Greg will discuss the different media responses to a commercial aircraft engine fire, a cargo plane’s landing gear collapse, crash and fire as well as the deadly active shooter event on January 6, 2017, in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2. All three events caused the closure of the airport’s runways and in some cases, the airport itself.
During each event, there were different media challenges and demands. During both aircraft incidents, the NTSB had different approaches on how to handle the media. Greg’s presentation will share his insight on how to work with the media to ensure your agency's message resonates through various channels.
Social media played a large part in all three events which complimented the messaging given to reporters face to face. Greg has presented at several communications conferences with ACI-NA, the NTSB in Ashburn, Virginia as well as at the National Information Officer Association’s Conference in Clearwater, Florida and the Chatham County Hurricane Conference in Savannah, Georgia. The presentation is loaded with dramatic visuals, great takeaways and an interesting perspective from Greg, a former investigative reporter.
